This week I am reviewing Fat Gripz Axle Bar Adapters. This product enables you to simulate using an Axle Bar, which is a Barbell (and more recently dumbbell handles) which is thicker than the standard Olympic 1.1inch diameter. FatGripz push the diameter up to 2.25″ which significantly changes how you lift. Training with adapters or an Axle bar helps develop grip strength and forearm strength, while doing regular barbell and dumbbell motions. You can use them while benching, curling, deadlifts even for OHP.
The Good
Not many gyms even have an Axle bar so being able to throw these things in your bag is quick and easy. They’re lightweight, durable (I’ve had mine for over 2 years) and are great when you want to add in some additional grip/forearm training to your workout. They’re not to expensive either. I found a pair on sale for $24. There are cheaper knock-off brands but I like to stick with these.
The Bad
They’re pieces of rubber, not much to it. The only cons I’ve seen is that if you’re sweating the rubber gets difficult to grasp. Also remember that the diameter means you wont be able to lift as much, so you will have to dial it down a bit. Not much, about 5lbs less should be enough.
Conclusion
I don’t always train with the adapters but when I want to challenge myself and get some additional pump and grip strength training, I will throw them on for a few sets. Pick up a pair and see how you like them.
