How Do We Handle Progression?

The other day Jnyx, one of my most dedicated clients, asked me a question. He asked “Coming from powerlifting programs, how do we handle progression?

My gut reaction to Jnyx was to tell him to measure it in sets and reps. But I’ve realized something. Progression is subjective and pinned to your own particular goals.

Want to know if you have progressed? What do you see in the mirror? When you walk down the street do you feel like you are a vicious beast? Let’s face it fellas, we aren’t going to be Arnold and we don’t have to. What we can be is our best self.

Mehdi and his SL 5×5 program has made quite a name for himself, but if you are pegging your progress to adding another 5 pounds to the bar there is a problem. So ask yourself, what is it you want?  For me, I want to be strong, lean, healthy and fit. That doesn’t come from injuring myself.

So here is today’s challenge fellas. Grab some 10 pound dumbbells and curl them to failure. 20 reps? 50 reps? 100 reps? 500? Let’s see how many reps you get to failure on 10 pounds and in a month let’s see again. Did it go up? Did it go down? None of that matters. What matters is this: Are you enjoying your workout and do you feel like a total beast.

To answer your question Jynx, this is how we measure progression. We put everything on the line and feel terrific.

There’s only one way to handle progression:

Thanks for the custom post WB. When we were chatting earlier I meant what I said. The numbers (on the bar) mean shit to me anymore.

I want to gain size, keep fat off, and look like a monster. How you feel about me doing that with 10lb weights means fuck all to me.

Amen.

I don’t think we should let ourselves get sucked into the mental trap of measuring progress in any one way. But one of the big ones is improving our understanding of what is effective and not effective (leave it to me to intellectualize everything, even lifting). The last two weeks have been revolutionary for me.

I become aware of the other people in the gym and remind myself, “Your focus is inward.”
I abandon lifting heavy… years wasted trying to get 5 more pounds on a bar, feeling nothing but worn and weaker for the effort.
I allow myself only one quantitative metric for strength: my 20-rep max.
I see the time wasted by lifters scrolling through their phones due to excessive rest periods punctuating 5-rep sets, and am thankful that I am no longer doing those things too.

Progress is being on the right path.

Thanks CoP! Glad you are feeling great. “Worn and weeker” is not what we do this for!

I used to think, “What if something bad happened and I needed to run or lift something and I won;t be able to because I’m constantly weak from training.” Using the workout you gave me I just feel like a beast. I;m sore but not overly so to where I can’ function in life, except for my first freakin’ leg day……

Glad to here it JJ!

As for first leg day, that’s beyond my control…

JumpnJive

Oh no. It’s all your fault 🙂

I was sucked into the heavy weight low rep bullshit too. When you first start SS its great. Your numbers go up every workout. You feel good and you are adding weight so it must be working right? Then you get past noob gains and you hit that fucking wall where you struggle to lift more. You fail every workout to add that fucking 5 lbs. You lose focus and you fail.

I realized how much I hated lifting heavy only once I started volume training. I actually enjoy it and its a lot of fun. 20 rep max is a good standard. When you’re doing 4×20, then think about increasing the weight.

I couldn’t agree more. Wish I was doing this 5 years ago.

The weight will go up eventually. Just a side effect of getting stronger. The thing is to stop thinking of the weight as the goal and start thinking about your muscle as the goal.

The goal is to break down muscle fibers. What does I it matter if you are using 10 pound dumbbell or 110 pound one?

This is the equivalent of saying you would rather drive a fancy car and never get to your destination

Funny thing JNyx. When you are 200+ and around 10% body fat people tend not to give you their opinions in person. Lol. It’s almost time. Tick Tock
