Lifting Face

One of the most important and most over looked things in the gym is the mind-muscle connection. If you go into the gym with your notebook or an app that lists your workout and you do your lifts and cross them off you just aren’t getting it all the way done. You have to think through ever inch of the range of motion. You need to summon all of your intensity. You should have CT Fletcher’s voice in your head yelling “It’s Still Your Mother Fuckin’ Set.”

People put down gym grunting too quickly. I am not saying that you should be the guy who makes huge, loud grunts for attention. However, you should be putting 100% into it which will result in noises coming out of you. More than this, However, you should be making that lifting face.

This is the face of a man who is focusing on the ROM and nothing else

When you connect your mind to your muscle and you squeeze through your ROM and push yourself to the point of making a lifting face and some grunt escaping that is when you get maximum results. Face it, we all have our bad day at the gym here and there, but as a general rule you should have your self totally focused on the lift to the point where the world disappears and it is just you and the iron.

Yours Truly and His Lifting Mug

It is so important to focus on every aspect of your lift and not just to put your mind away during your workout session that I am contemplating giving up my headphones. Has anyone experimented with a music free lifting session where the only noise is the gym background noise and the sound of the iron? If so, comment below and let me know your results.

The Mind-Muscle connection – this is classic fucking old school. Eliminating ALL distractions, focusing on the completion of that set… Can’t impress upon people enough, how incredibly important this principle is. Unfortunately these days, the “average” gym is filled with constant talking, texting, selfies, etc. I think most people would be amazed at how their bodies responded if they developed a firm grasp of this all too often overlooked principle.

As far as music goes, I typically prefer a music-free lifting environment – nothing quite like the sound of iron. If there is music being played, I prefer hard, heavy rock or hip-hop with heavy, heavy beats. The rhythm of the music can, in some cases, compliment the rhythm of each repetition. I’ve had the pleasure to workout out at some really great gyms over the years and the rule was always either: “No Music, or Heavy Ass Shit only” – either way, all great lifting experiences – you can’t go wrong!

I like the “heavy ass shit” rule. The absolute worst sound in the gym is TV. The cadence of the braying jackasses on SportsCenter (or any other talking head) is enough to sap my willpower straight through my pores.

I’ve tried lifting without music but it leads me to become easily distracted. For best lifting results I need to get into an aggressive mindset. Some professional fighters talk about being relaxed in order to perform well before a fight, but for me that leads to lackluster performance. In order to perform my best I need to get into the hyper focused zone & the mindset of fighting as though my life depends on it, then afterwards it’s time to relax.

I found the same thing when I tried lifting no music. It was a good idea, but not for me. I do need it to be music I know so well i won’t pay attention to it. Just let my subconscious mind get all psyched.
